The aim is only to allow diplomats to carry out their functions with security and confidentiality, and also to recognise diplomats function as representatives of their country. It does not grant them freedom to flout local law, although they may be immune to local jurisdiction to enforce such laws. Contrary to a widespread belief, a diplomatic mission is not “extra-territorial”: it is, however, given the protection of inviolability within the receiving state. This rule refers to its premises and diplomatic dispatches. But all privileges and immunities are solely directed towards facilitating performance of diplomatic missions.

George R. Lefevre of NeoTactix, MotivNations advisor, discussed the
companys two-phase strategy for near term growth, saying that “The Damons
operation serves as MotivNations creative center or hub. Tom Prewitt has
earned a unique place in the custom automotive and motorcycle builder
community for cutting-edge design and finish work so the first phase of our
strategy is to leverage Tom and Damons reputation and relationships to
develop and acquire proprietary lines of signature lines of accessories to
both the enthusiast and the trade. There are presently a two product
categories that we expect to launch before the end of the year. Lets just
say we are waiting for the paint to dry.” Mr. Lefevre went on to describe
the second phase of the strategy, saying that “We believe that distribution
and marketing are central to our success and to that end we will market and
distribute our own product lines directly to the trade and the enthusiast.”
The companys growth market opportunity and growth agenda is outlined in a
one-page company profile which is available upon request by contacting the
company.

Tom Prewitt, President of MotivNation, added to his comments, saying that
“We have been very busy evaluating several acquisition opportunities that
follow our strategy for growth. This has been a good process for Damons
allowing us to look at our many years in this industry and the
relationships we have built in a new way. Now we are talking with friends
about joining forces together to really grow a company that brings together
some of the best talent and products with a national distribution structure
that will feed the growing appetite of the custom automotive and enthusiast
market.”

About MotivNation: Based in Irvine, California, MotivNation is
aggressively positioned in the custom automotive and motorcycle enthusiast
market. The foundation for the business is the platform custom operation
of Damons Motorcycle Creations. Based in Southern California, Damons has
gained national acclaim in the custom automotive and custom motorcycle
community as a noted “master builder to the master builders.”
MotivNations target clients are in two categories: the individual custom
automotive enthusiast or collectors of the “one-of-a-kind” custom
motorcycle and auto creations. The second and primary market are the local
fabrication and custom shops who buy materials and supplies for their work
in serving a growing market appetite for custom or modified automobile or
motorcycles creations of their own.

A yearlong heavy moving project for Emmert International, a heavy moving company, is nearing an end. The Clackamas company has been hauling over-dimensional pieces of equipment weighing a total of 10,000 metric tons for the $220 million overhaul of the Phillips Petroleum refinery in Ferndale, Wash. The largest of the 10 pieces of equipment is an FCC Converter that takes crude oil and converts it into different forms of petroleum products. It is 171 feet, 6 inches long and 36 feet in diameter, and weighs 800 tons.
On June 21, law enforcement personnel from around the nation gathered at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in Jackson to discuss a hot topic - heavy equipment theft. Sponsored by FBI-LEEDA and the National Equipment Register (NER), the summit drew personnel from 45-50 law enforcement agencies from as far away as Denver who wanted to learn more about the growing problem of heavy equipment theft and how to fight it. Joey Gonce is director of the agriculture and livestock theft bureau at the Mississippi Department of Agriculture (MDAC). His main focus at the MDAC is agriculture theft, but he has fielded calls from construction companies that are missing equipment, and as a retired highway patrolman, hes seen it all.
The Capital Goods industry has three sub industries: electrical equipment, heavy equipment and machinery manufacturers. The three capital goods market segments have similar valuations even though their end products are different Another factor effecting the valuation of heavy equipment and capital goods companies is interest cost The current rate of interest is favorable for this group. Also, long term interest rates are relativly low which makes it easier for corporations and farmers to finance heavy equipment expenditures. Companies, in the heavy equipment industry, that obtain a significant amount of their sales in foreign markets usually have a higher growth rate and therefore a higher valuation. The reason is, there is a worldwide built up demand for infrastructure improvements. Therefore companies doing business in the international market have a good source for long term profits.

Several firms interested in a joint venture have approached the Santa Fe Springs company, which operates 12 skateboard parks in the United States. Gary Schoenfeld, Vans president and chief executive, said talks are preliminary. Theoretically the market is untapped, said Jeffrey Van Sinderen, an analyst with B. Riley Co. It would be a rebuilding year for Kansas State, everyone decided. Everyone was wrong, of course. Bill Snyders Wildcats hardly missed a beat, winning 10 regular-season games and losing only at Nebraska. A survey of sports editors and sportscasters gave the nod to Kansas States football fortunes over a host of interesting and intriguing developments making headlines during the year.

MAYBOLE electrician Gavin Campbell caused the biggest upset of the opening day in the Scottish International Open in Perth when he finished strongly to beat Welshman Rob Weale, the number seven seed and 2000 world indoor singles champion, 6-4, 7-7. “It was an absolutely cracking match, but to be honest I thought a tie-break was on the cards. The single on the penultimate end gave me a boost and I lengthened the jack, and that paid off when I got the three shots I needed to win, ” said Campbell. At the Hong Kong Classic Singles, Broxburns George Sneddon is the lone standard-bearer at the Craigengower club. He won through to todays quarter-finals and clashes with Irelands Jonathan Ross.
Elektrikerforbundet, the Swedish electricians union, has launched a strike parallel to the municipal strike. Although the strike is partly carried out in sympathy for the municipal workers, the electricians are also demanding a better work environment. The union has written a list of 20 points to improve the work environment and all of them would cost money to implement.

AbstractKey words: Reservation gaming, land tenure, wealth acquisition, tribal entrepreneurial activity, entrepreneurial adaptationThe Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 (IGRA) was inspired by a desire to increase tribal employment and educational opportunities, thus reducing the chronic poverty of reservations while maintaining a degree of tribal self-governance. Research indicates some short-term benefits. Reservations with casino gaming have increased tribal employment, reduced tribal welfare rolls, increased childrens educational levels (Vinje, 1996; Blackwell, 2001), and in a few cases, such as the Foxwoods Resort and Casino of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe in Connecticut, have made tribal members wealthy (Eisler, 2001). The long-term economic benefits of Indian casinos, however, are still hotly debated within both the tribal structure and the community of academic researchers (e.g., Harvey, 1996; Mezey, 1996).
OREM — Brooks Shankle, the Orem Owlz reserve first baseman, hasnt had many chances this season to deliver a game-winning hit. And playing in only 15 of Orems 37 games, he also has had much need for redemption. But for a short time Saturday he was looking like the goat after dropping a throw from pitcher Aaron Cook in the eighth inning, an error that resulted in a key run for the Idaho Falls Chukars and had the game knotted heading into Orems final at bat. Shankle entered the game hitting only .170 and was hitless Saturday prior to the clutch game-winner. It was only his third RBI of the season.
PROVO — The monkey is finally off BYUs back. On Friday, the Cougars (2-12-1) ended their 12-game losing streak by knocking off the Boulder Rapids Reserves 2-1 in overtime. “I have a whole new appreciation for winning now,” BYU coach Chris Watkins said. “It is neat to be rewarded with three points at the end of the day. “Clearly we are getting better. We had our window of opportunity and we finally jumped through it.” It was BYU reserve Chris Lamb who helped the Cougars through that window.

Sports Chiropractic EDITORS: ROBERT D. MOOTZ, DC, AND KEVIN MCCARTHY, DC PUBLISHER: ASPENPart One of this book is devoted to conditioning and exercise injury prevention with articles on the health benefits of exercise, aerobic conditioning related to injury prevention and rehabilitation, weight training, and chiropractic spinal care of the athlete. The articles are well-written and supplemented appropriately with illustrations and photographs. This section has extensive appendices covering topics from readiness questionnaires to examinations to consent forms and recommendations for preventing injuries to major components of the musculoskeletal system. They will provide the practicing doctor of chiropractic with some ready-made forms to use in a sports chiropractic practice. The second part of this compilation addresses injury care. There are sections on assuring quality of care, diagnosis and management of common injuries to the knee, lower leg, and foot, and sections on spinal stabilization and myofascial pain syndromes. In addition to excellent photographs demonstrating most of the procedures, these sections-like others in the book-have accompanying algorithms. TICC is well known for its extensive use of quality algorithms. These most definitely enhance and facilitate the learning experience. For those not familiar with these wonderful tools, they provide a step-by-step approach to making clinical decisions and deciding which procedure should follow. They take the clinician through some complex processes in a logical, easy-to-follow manner.
For the longest time, the chiropractic profession has been trying to convince payers (particularly managed care organizations) that chiropractic care is not an “add-on,” but is actually a replacement for more expensive/invasive forms of care. This is at the heart of our argument that chiropractic care saves money by providing patients with a safer, more cost-effective alternative. Finally, a research study has confirmed what weve been saying all along. The results of a recent study that appeared in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine “indicate that patients use chiropractic care as a direct substitution for medical care.”1This four-year descriptive study was conducted from April 1997 to March 2001. The study wasnt a survey; the investigators used actual claims data from a large regional managed care network in California. They included both inpatient and outpatient claims data for members of the managed care network.

I am talking about the chronic givers–elderly people and those who are doctor dependent. One woman has kept me in eight varieties of home made jam for years. To her I give excess produce from my garden (whether it is suitable for incorporation in jam or not). Patients who insist on bringing chocolate for my children on ever), visit receive some sort of confectionery from them at Christmas. You may argue that by this reciprocity I am perpetuating the situation. I feel it restores a balance. Some patients do not like it, which is fine by me. If they refuse to accept a gift from me how could I possibly take one from them? At this point I have to admit that I was brought up giving presents to patients. I clearly remember, as a child in the 60s, doing the Christmas round with my father, who was also a general practitioner. The back of his car contained a large cardboard box of poinsettias and half a dozen individually wrapped baby bottles of champagne. As darkness fell and Christmas lights came on in windows we would drive from one fusty home to another, greeting impossibly old and decaying and undoubtedly lonely people. Everywhere the welcome was warm; sometimes there were drinks and mince pies, and we collected chocolates and bottles ourselves as the afternoon progressed. These patients had become special to my father over the years by virtue of their age, their disabilities, their social isolation, or just their personalities. Moreover, I suspect that giving as well as receiving at Christmas helped him to maintain a position of strength through the ensuing 12 months of regular visiting, a feature of general practice in those days.
THE bookies arent taking any bets on the Christmas No1 this year - because theyre so sure it will be the X Factor winner again. For the last two years, X Factor boss Simon Cowell has released the winners single on the Monday before Christmas. In 2005 Shayne Ward went straight to No1 - and last year it was Leona Lewis. A William Hill spokesman said: “X Factor has wiped out a national Christmas institution.”

Cognitive Hypnotherapy. Thomas E. Dowd. Northvale, NJ: Jason Aronson (2002). 240 pages, $40. Reviewed by: Bruce N. Eimer, Ph.D., ABPP, Philadelphia, PA. Until recently, there has been little in the CT literature on the use of hypnosis (Golden et al., 1987). In the language of the laterality of brain functions, cognitive therapy has emphasized “left brain” thinking as opposed to “right brain” creativity and imagination. In Cognitive Hypnotherapy, Tom Dowd successfully changes this emphasis-adding “right brain” to what was mostly a “left brain” art. For CT and CBT practitioners, Cognitive Hypnotherapy offers options for expanding the scope and flexibility of their practice by adding hypnosis to it. For clinical hypnosis practitioners, this book models efficient ways of integrating cognitive restructuring and reframing techniques with direct and indirect, permissive, hypnosis trance induction and therapeutic suggestion techniques.
Hypnosis is widely used and accepted as an adjunct to treatment for pain control, habit disorders, symptom reduction, and many medical problems. Although in the past the application and effectiveness of hypnosis have been questioned by the medical community, the clinical disciplines that use hypnotherapy have grown to include the medical specialties, psychiatry, psychology, and social work. In the last 20 years over 100 review articles have been published by a diverse membership in both the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis and the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, which are the respective journals of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. The International Society of Hypnosis is composed of individual members from more than 20 national constituent societies. The use of hypnosis is widespread in various areas of clinical medicine, and family physicians are in an ideal position to address questions about the indications, misconceptions, and contraindications for the use of hypnosis. The physicians understanding of the history, theory, and clinical application can help guide the patient to this alternate therapeutic modality. Education in basic and advanced hypnosis can also enhance the family physicians armamentarium in diagnosing and treating many common ailments.

Using deinked pulp (DIP) can bring financial benefits and meet publisher and consumer needs, but it can also present challenges in maintaining paper machine runnability–especially in deposit control for operations combining TMP and DIP. There is often a false perception of process stability. A clean process with low colloidal organics does not always account for a constant fraction of agglomerated organics that may be floating around a system. This material is large enough to be outside the colloidal detection limits and has the potential to create deposits. A paper machine process can only carry a certain load of accumulated organics before those organics agglomerate and deposit on the machine.

When asked what percent of the wealthy feel that luxury quality is
declining, the luxury executives said they thought that 51% of consumers
felt that way. In reality only 38% of consumers polled felt that way.
Ironically, luxury executives were far more bearish on this issue than
consumers. However, when asked what percent of the wealthy feel that luxury
brands are becoming a commodity, the luxury executives answered 52%, while
wealthy consumers answered 63%, far worse that executives thought.

Luxury executives were more bearish than consumers when asked what percent
of the wealthy feel that the customer service of luxury firms meet
expectations, (WLC executives 44%, consumers 53%). Further, 45% of the
luxury executives thought that wealthy consumers had a problem requiring
resolution in the past twelve months whereas only 29% of consumers answered
affirmatively. Still, the high numbers of wealthy consumers who responded
negatively to these questions is most disturbing.

Discussion followed along the lines that with luxury becoming muddled in
all sorts of pundit-driven terminology, and many major luxury brands going
down-market, or expanding to the levels of mass-market brands, truly
wealthy consumers are rebelling by seeking truly unique and exclusive
brands, especially custom-made and one-of-a-kind products that deliver
superior quality and great service too. It seems some in luxury are
forgetting the fundamentals that made luxury worthy of a premium price in
the first place.

Residents in nursing homes may be in danger because of understaffing of nurses and nursing assistants, according to federal health officials. The government is recommending new rules that would require thousands of nursing homes to hire more nurses and nursing assistants. However, nursing home administrators say that Medicare and Medicaid payments arent sufficient to cover staff increases. The proposed regulations would, in part, require that patients get more than 12 minutes of care per resident day from RNs, 45 minutes from total licensed staff (RNs and LPNs), and 2 hours from nursing assistants. Residents in facilities that fall below these minimum standards experience significantly more problems.
The first step is to hire a design professional who has experience in working with the regulators who have jurisdiction over the facility. The existing codes and regulations written for nursing homes appear to be based on the hospital model, even though — as weve noted — these facilities have quite different functions. These codes and regulations definitely should not be the determining influence on the final layout of a nursing unit. The process for change must begin with dialogue among the regulator, the architect and the owner, and a partnership formed. Our experience has shown that if you start by getting the regulators involved early in the process, they will become an integral part of the team and help obtain the desired goals. The intent is not to try to beat the code, but to develop equivalencies that satisfy regulators safety requirements and administrators operational needs. Working toward the intent rather than the letter of existing codes is challenging, but is worthwhile, because the result can change the look of the nursing station and, at the same time, meet the needs of staff and residents.

SAN FRANCISCO — For all the power and complexity of modern computer networks, practical computer security against cybervandals may ultimately be found in the commonplace concept of a burglar alarm. Schneiers credentials include creating the Twofish encryption algorithm, which is a candidate to become the advanced encryption standard being set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. So it may seem odd that a scientist who designs unbreakable mathematical locks for protecting information is calling on e-commerce companies to put mere people back in the computer- security equation. But Schneier argues that to trust the safety of information stored in a computer system to even the most powerful computer security software alone is foolhardy. That is why his new company, Counterpane Internet Security, has adopted a business model remarkably like that of ADT Security Services, the burglar alarm company.
Computers and Accounting In manual accounting systems, all entries are handwritten and all records are prepared by hand, although admittedly with the aid of a calculator. Initial transactions such as sales and payables are recorded in specialized journals and then posted manually to the subsidiary journals and/or to the appropriate general ledger accounts. At the end of an accounting cycle, whether monthly, quarterly or annually, worksheets are set up, adjusting entries are made, and financial statements and reports are prepared. In a computerized accounting system, the same basic components must exist. There will be receivables, payables, inventory, payroll and depreciation, all of which must be recorded and properly processed to give the same end product–reliable financial statements and reports. An individual must make the initial entry whether it is handwritten or keyed into a computer. So just what is the difference, and what are the advantages?

All the major brands, from Nikon to Canon and Pentax to Sony, offer point-and-shoot digital cameras. Even Hewlett-Packard has jumped on the digital camera bandwagon. According to Justin Porterfield, manager of the ZCMI Center Inkleys, the cost ranges from $100 to $1,000. One in the $500-price range will get you near single lens reflex quality, he said. According to Allred, most digital cameras have a small LCD monitor on the back that is ideal for composing and reviewing images. It also lets you magnify the images to check for accurate focus and small details. Most digital cameras use compact flash type I memory cards that allow easy downloading to a computer or printer through a USB port on the camera. This allows easy transmission of photographic data to a PC or Mac. Most digital cameras can record movies in AVI format with a duration of up to 30 seconds. The low-quality movies are really for e-mailing and not for television viewing.

Security is an issue for all homeowners, But by taking precautions such as installing additional door locks and rolling-code garage door openers, your home will be safe and secure. Another way to add security to your home is by installing a garage door opener that removes the chance of a thief copying the signals. The Genie Intellicode garage door opener is used exclusively in our Show Homes. This unique system implements a rolling-code radio system to lock out high-tech crooks by making a duplicated signal useless. Every time the remote control button is pressed, the openers radio access code rolls or changes to one of 4.3 billion new codes. It is like changing the lock on your door each time its opened or closed.
Safe and secure storage of firearms in the home is no longer a matter of common sense left to responsible adults. Federal law now mandates that all handguns be sold with a locking device of some sort which, we hasten to add, does not relieve you, the gun owner, from any further responsibility. Indeed, we have some reservations about the efficacy of some of the cheesy trigger locks that are tossed in with some new handguns simply to comply with the law. Devices to store a firearm at home fall into three categories–locks on the guns themselves, portable containers and heavy steel gun safes. Prices range from a couple of bucks for a trigger lock to several thousand for a top-of-the-line gun safe.

Detectives Can Now Embark on the Latest Agatha Christie Mystery Adventure Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express draws fans in as they step aboard a lavishly appointed 1930s era train along with a cast of 25 intriguing characters led by acclaimed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and including philanthropist Samuel Ratchett and Princess Dragomiroff, all traveling from Istanbul to London. The game adds a new main character to the storyline as well, Antoinette Marceau, a train company employee, crime buff and a huge fan of Poirots. The luxurious rail trip quickly shifts gear when a heinous murder is committed, shocking everyone aboard and fueling a hunt for the killer. Poirot immediately starts to investigate and agrees to let Marceau act as his assistant, given her relentless zeal for solving crimes. In the role of Marceau, players are guided and tested at every step by Poirot, as well as other forces, as the mystery unfolds. The game is enriched by the voice of David Suchet, as Poirot, the actor who has come to epitomize the Belgian detective on TV.

Denver bound?
THE FINAL vacation days of summer are rapidly approaching. Traveling with pets can be great fun, but if your dog or cat hates to travel, the trip could be your worst nightmare, and hers, too. What arrangements do you need to make? Some dogs and cats do perfectly well in a boarding facility, while others do better when they stay in their own home. For a pet who will stay at home, a reliable friend or family member who can sleep over in your home is best for a dog. A cat will be OK alone for a short time with someone regularly visiting to give her food, water and some human companionship. If you dont have a friend or family member who can come do this for you, numerous bonded and insured pet sitting services are available.

THE PRESS may lazily lump TV on the Radio into the hip Williamsburg music clique, but their ideas and music are leagues apart from the $150 jeans scene. TV on the Radio is gospel music for the 21st century church of despair. Their ominous tones accurately reflect the increasing amount of entropy in the world, while their lyrics depict the struggle to make sense of it all. Singer Tunde Adebimpe breaks it down for us. As far as that stuff goes, I would say that there are some songs on the LP (Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes) that are naturally about the aftermath of that. And I feel like its a cheap thing to be like, Okay great, this is my tragedy by proxy, even though I wasnt really that attached or even knew anyone involved. I would hate for anyone to think: Wow, this terrible thing happened and now everyone is going to he able to profit off the misery of it. Its not that at all; its very, very basic. It occupies a lot of your head space, though. I hear that, but a whole lot of people dont live in New York and have no idea what it was like to go through such a terrible event.

Is your son climbing the walls, begging you to let him be Spiderman for Halloween this year? If so, youre not alone. Once again, the webbed superhero is one of the most popular costume choices for the Halloween season. But if you dont have an outfit ready, you may be out of luck. Stores across Utah Valley are selling out of popular costumes like Spidey. Here are some popular alternatives that can be quickly thrown together with clothes and items lying around the house:
These slip-over bug costumes are easy Prepare to be bombarded this Halloween by a swarm of flying and crawling insects. But dont get out the bug spray-our colorful creatures are charming pests. Made of bright felt, the padded costumes slip on over leotard and tights, or shorts and a shirt. Because all seams are sewn on the right side of the fabric, the suits are easy to assemble-just stitch, then trim with scissors or pinking shears. You can complete one in an afternoon or two; total cost per bug is $20 to $30.
A pirates sash, a musketeers blouse and a 1920s flapper girl fringe are some of the many costumes created out of Thad Hansens love of reading about the past. Hansen is owner of Salt Lake Costume, and in his business, researching history is a necessity in designing wardrobes for different time periods. As a youngster Thatcher read Hardy Boys books along with John Jakes “American Bicentennial Series,” which follows a family line through a number of centuries and adventures. But now some of his favorites are J.R.R. Tolkiens “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” as well as Alexander Dumas “Man in the Iron Mask” and “Count of Monte Cristo.” “Those books (Tolkiens) are well-done, and I kind of like fantasy- type books with different words,” said Hansen.

As part of a project to educate homeowners on making their homes more energy-efficient, one Oklahoma City couple volunteered their house for a thorough inspection Wednesday to determine how much energy it was wasting and what they can do about it. Sustainable OKC, the local branch of the Oklahoma Sustainability Network, and Guaranteed Watt Saver worked out an arrangement where GWS will inspect four houses for free and present their findings at the groups sustainability conference in April. After about an hour-long inspection, Parker and Curtis Maxwell, GWSs Oklahoma operational manager, determined the 1,517-square- foot home wasnt in that bad of shape when it came to energy loss.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics released a report on improving criminal history records for background checks.
Less than a decade ago, only 51 percent of employers conducted background checks on applicants, according to research released this month by the Society for Human Resource Management. Today, 96 percent of employers do so, and the practice is as prevalent among small and medium-sized companies as it is among large companies. As technology develops, background checking may become even easier for employers, particularly as more record holders create Internet-friendly databases that employers can refer to easily. For example, the Social Security Administration is piloting an Internet program that enables same-day or next-day verification of a persons name and Social Security number. This in turn could open up new channels of background checking, since Social Security numbers can serve as a gateway to other vital information.

Pest controllers locate, identify, repel, and destroy pests. They use their knowledge of pests habits, along with an arsenal of pest management techniques-applying chemicals, setting traps, operating equipment, and even modifying building structures-to alleviate pest problems. The best known method of pest control is pesticide application. Pest controllers apply two different types of pesticides: common use and restricted use. Common use pesticides are the most widely used and are readily available; in diluted concentrations, they are available to the public. Restricted use pesticides are available only to professionals for the most severe infestations. Their application is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because of their potential harm to pest controllers, customers, and the environment.
Useful tables of information and focused lists of suggested readings. Emphasis on such techniques as mechanical control of pests, uses of beneficial insects and pheromones to control pests, traps, and non-toxic compounds as alternatives to toxic chemical. Among the other changes coming into effect next year are ones that permit committees to make local rules to prohibit play from an environmentally sensitive area. A further amendment will deny a player relief when his stance, not the ball, is affected by casual water, ground under repair or certain damage to the course.

Bikes are magical, says Lee Ravenscroft amid piles of tires, handlebars, gear boxes, and buckets of chains in the unheated warehouse of Working Bikes Cooperative. The all-volunteer group takes donated and discarded bikes, repairs them, and then distributes them locally and internationally. The cooperative has working relationships with nongovernmental organizations in Latin America and Africa. In April, the three-year-old group plans to ship several hundred bikes to Angola. And it recently managed to send a volunteer to Ghana in addition to bicycles. In the Third World, bikes help farmers deliver produce and enable children to go to better schools, Ravenscroft says. Nick Colombo, a college student and volunteer, says that Working Bikes Cooperative is a good introduction to the subversive yet innocuous rebel subculture of people who like bikes. We take garbage and make it usable, he says.

THE EARLY STORIES: 1953-1975 by JOHN UPDIKE(HAMISH HAMILTON, (pounds) 25) Updike, like those two other writing Johns - Cheever and OHara - is a lusty writer who, from the outset of his career, had sex on his mind. Rare are the stories in this seductive volume, comprising more than 800 pages and 100 stories, in which a narrator does not rest his eye on a woman. Men tell most of Updikes stories but women provide their impetus. Women make men do things they ought not, luring them into dangerous situations, offering indefinable, almost indescribable delights, unhinging them. In Transaction, a 40-year-old married man, high on brandy, picks up a prostitute and takes her back to his hotel where he talks and she listens until eventually he is able to perform. Throughout the hour they spend together he pays her compliments, enquires after her welfare, and says he fears for her returning to the street. But the real fear he feels is for himself - for his loss of potency, his fading youth and his inability to turn her on. She is an object, to be used and abused. If his concern for her was truly real, he would accept her offer to stay the night but, for the sake of a few dollars, he rejects her. Ultimately, it is a story about control, about where the power in a relationship lies.
